Because to us, it&#x2019;s a completely unethical practice.<br>Animals are living, breathing creatures. They experience a wide range of emotions (like fear) and sensory experiences (like pain). Submitting animals to painful, fear-inducing experiences in the name of beauty just isn&#x2019;t right.</p><p>We wouldn&#x2019;t subject our dogs, cats, or other pets to animal testing&#x2014;so why would we do the same to a helpless animal in a laboratory? If you&apos;re unsure about why animal testing is unethical, then hopefully viewing animal testing in this way will help clarify why we are so passionate about remaining cruelty-free. The first&#x2014;and arguably most important&#x2014;reason we choose not to test our products on animals? Because to us, it&#x2019;s a completely unethical practice.</p><h3 id="animal-testing-is-unreliable">Animal testing is unreliable</h3><p>In addition to being completely unethical, testing products on animals just isn&#x2019;t reliable.</p><p>Animals and humans have completely different genetics&#x2014;and, as a result of those differences, the results you get from animal testing often aren&#x2019;t transferable to humans (for example, more than 90% of drugs that show promising results in animals fail in human drug trials).</p><p>Testing a beauty product for toxicity or potential skin reactions on a rat or rabbit doesn&#x2019;t give cosmetics companies reliable information on how that product might react with humans&#x2014;rendering it a waste of time.</p><h3 id="animal-testing-is-unnecessary">Animal testing is unnecessary</h3><p>On top of being both unethical and unreliable, in today&#x2019;s world (with all its technological advances), animal testing is also completely unnecessary.</p><p>There are a number of more effective processes for testing a new beauty product for safety than animal testing. A 2017 article from Allure profiled <em>MatTek,</em> a Massachusetts-based laboratory that is changing the way cosmetic and skin care products are tested.</p><p>MatTek uses 3D skin modeling to effectively test how products will react on human skin. By using human skin samples (typically left over from cosmetic procedures), scientists are able to create models of a variety of different skin types and conditions (so, for example, scientists can use melanocytes to create pigmented skin models to mimic various ethnicities). Rosacea causes facial redness and flushing, making it difficult to conceal. It&#x2019;s the sole reason green concealer was invented (green makeup can help to counteract redness, instantly).</p><h2 id="what-is-rosacea"><strong>What is Rosacea?</strong></h2><p>Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder characterized by redness. Rosacea symptoms also include stinging, itching, flushing, and acne-like bumps. It most frequently appears along the nose and cheek area and can be so severe that it causes swelling (rhinophyma). This results in a bulbous, bumpy skin texture.</p><h2 id="rosacea-symptoms"><strong>Rosacea Symptoms</strong></h2><p>Rosacea can be a very uncomfortable skin condition, affecting facial skin, and dermatologists have seen mild to extremely severe cases. In addition to redness, swelling, and other symptoms, Rosacea sufferers may also experience swelling and subsequent sagging once the fluid drains. This is usually most apparent in the cheeks. This brings excess blood to the surface, causing flushing and redness to occur. This, coupled with bacteria, sun damage, microscopic skin mites (Demodex), irritation of the follicles, and an unusual immune response, brings on red, bump,y irritated skin.</p><h2 id="rosacea-triggers"><strong>Rosacea Triggers</strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.provenskincare.com/blog/skin-fix-top-10-common-skincare-mistakes">Rosacea</a> has some common triggers. Here are just a few:</p><h3 id="sun-exposure">Sun Exposure</h3><p>We all know sun exposure causes redness, however, it also dilates blood vessels, which creates heat in the skin. This increases irritation and inflammation. UV rays also break down collagen over time, making skin more transparent and causing blood vessels to become more visible, and, in some cases, triggering rosacea.</p><h3 id="emotional-stress">Emotional Stress</h3><p>Stress affects your immune system in many ways and changes your body&#x2019;s inflammatory response. When you&#x2019;re stressed, it&#x2019;s common to have a Rosacea flare-up. Anything from losing a job to losing a loved one to planning a wedding or a cross-country move can induce stress, causing a slight rise in blood pressure as well as symptoms of rosacea beginning to appear and worsen.</p><h3 id="hot-or-cold-weatherwind">Hot or Cold Weather/Wind</h3><p>Dry, cold air and harsh winds are irritating to those with Rosacea. So is hot weather, regardless of whether it is humid or dry. Heat not only triggers inflammation but can also cause sweating and heat rash. Can sweating make rosacea worse? Commonly, yes, as sweating and heat rash both aggravate this skin condition. This is why many people experience rosacea while perspiring, or notice rosacea heat rash when warm.</p><h3 id="beverages-alcohol-and-hot-liquids">Beverages: Alcohol and Hot Liquids</h3><p>Hot liquids are often consumed in the winter, so this reaction is probably due to a combination of factors. Alcohol is also a known trigger, especially red wine, which has high levels of tannins. Tannins act as natural histamines and can stimulate allergic reactions. Alcohol can cause redness and flushing even in those who don&#x2019;t have Rosacea.</p><h3 id="spicy-foods">Spicy Foods</h3><p>Spicy foods cause blood vessels to dilate, which aggravates Rosacea. Other foods can irritate your skin, including very acidic citrus fruits. That&#x2019;s why it&#x2019;s helpful to keep a diary of what you eat along with your symptoms so you can keep track of your reactions and try to avoid foods that can trigger flare-ups.</p><h3 id="strenuous-exercise">Strenuous Exercise</h3><p>Exercise dilates your blood vessels and causes heat, friction, and sweat. Unfortunately, this can be very irritating for those with Rosacea, and heat only further aggravates Rosacea symptoms, which means heavy exercise can also cause flare-ups. It&apos;s always a good idea to keep a facial cleanser in your gym bag so you can cleanse away dirt and perspiration, whether or not you are struggling with this skin condition.</p><h3 id="hot-baths-and-showers">Hot Baths and Showers</h3><p>Heat and Rosacea go hand in hand, and as we mentioned above, heat can trigger inflammation of Rosacea. Hot water causes sensitivity and <a href="https://www.provenskincare.com/blog/the-best-way-to-moisturize-super-dry-skin">dryness in all skin types</a>, so it&#x2019;s no wonder it makes Rosacea symptoms worse. Though a hot shower is tempting, especially during winter months, keep the water temperature warm or even on the cooler side, if possible. And, once you step out of the tub, reach for a moisturizer.</p><h3 id="certain-skin-care-products">Certain Skin Care Products</h3><p>Anything that dries out your skin, dilates your blood vessels, or causes irritation will exacerbate Rosacea. Alcohol, Fragrance, Glycolic Acid, Menthol, and SLS are just a few irritating ingredients that can make Rosacea worse. If Rosacea is undiagnosed or appears for the first time, many sufferers try random topical treatments at first, thinking an over-the-counter acne product or treatment for sensitive skin will address the issue. Some products can make the condition worse, triggering additional side effects like swelling, pimples, breakouts, soreness, and even more redness.</p><h2 id="rosacea-treatments"><strong>Rosacea Treatments</strong></h2><h3 id="azelaic-acid">Azelaic Acid</h3><p>This gentle exfoliator is also an anti-inflammatory. It helps to relieve the bumps and inflamed follicles associated with Rosacea. It can be difficult to exfoliate the skin when you have Rosacea because scrubbing or using AHAs like Lactic and Glycolic Acid is out of the question. That&#x2019;s why Azelaic Acid is so good at helping with skin turnover.</p><h3 id="niacinamide">Niacinamide</h3><p>This Vitamin B derivative helps to soothe inflammation associated with Rosacea. As a bonus, it also helps to even your skin tone and strengthen your skin barrier.</p><h3 id="spf">SPF</h3><p>Since the sun is such a well-known Rosacea trigger, it&#x2019;s important to use sun protection. Choose an SPF, preferably a daily broad-spectrum moisturizer, plus wear sunscreen if you&apos;re headed to the beach, to protect your skin from inflammation and redness, especially if you have fair skin. Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are especially soothing because they are inert, physical blockers that won&#x2019;t irritate your skin, and you do not want to experience sunburn along with other skin conditions. So if you are someone who struggles with rosacea and sun exposure isn&apos;t something you actively guard against, using daily SPF is a crucial step in your skin care regimen.</p><h3 id="see-a-dermatologist">See a dermatologist</h3><p>While Rosacea can be irritating and, quite frankly, annoying, it can also be painful in the most severe cases. There are several treatment options, like topical medications and lotions as well as oral antibiotics, including minocycline and tetracycline, that can be prescribed to ease symptoms. Some dermatologists may even recommend light therapy, a series of professional treatments to reduce facial redness, flushing, and telangiectasia (small blood vessels that are dilated). When it comes to reaching your #GlowGoals, it&#x2019;s your small, daily habits that will make the biggest difference.</p><p>Here are a few skin-care mistakes you might be making without even realizing, but are absolutely easy to fix:</p><h3 id="mistake-1-skipping-spf"><strong>Mistake #1: Skipping SPF</strong></h3><p>Sun damage is the #1 cause of wrinkles, fine lines, and discoloration (not to mention skin cancer). No amount of Botox, lasers, or other interventions later in life can truly make up for the sun damage your skin is exposed to in your younger years. The easiest way to prevent sun-damaged skin from premature aging is to protect it! Wear a face cream or moisturizer with SPF 30-50 <em>every day_&#x2013;even on cloudy days, even if you have darker skin. SPF is essential for _all</em> skin types, no matter how much melanin you have.</p><p><strong>Pro tip:</strong> Also apply SPF 50 to your neck and the backs of your hands to prevent these delicate, tough-to-treat areas from premature signs of aging.</p><h3 id="mistake-2-popping-pimples--picking-at-your-skin"><strong>Mistake #2: Popping pimples &amp; picking at your skin</strong></h3><p>Please: don&#x2019;t touch! <a href="https://www.provenskincare.com/blog/causes-of-acne-in-adults">Squeezing or scraping at pimples</a> damages your skin and creates scarring, which takes much longer to heal than that original pimple. We know how annoying those pustules can be, so dab some salicylic acid (for mild acne) or benzoyl peroxide (for more inflamed cysts) on the offending bumps. Short answer - yes! It may seem logical to wash your face with hot water--after all, you wash your body in a hot shower. But the skin on your face is more delicate, and hot water strips its natural oils, causing dryness, sensitivity, and/or over-stimulation of your oil glands.</p><p><strong>Wash this way:</strong> Use lukewarm water to wash your face once or (maximum) twice a day--it should feel neither warm nor cold when you run it over your hands.</p><h3 id="mistake-5-over-exfoliating"><strong>Mistake #5: Over-exfoliating</strong></h3><p>A little exfoliation is a good thing--it removes dead skin cells and dull spots, revealing brighter skin. But exfoliating too often will deplete the natural oils your skin needs for hydration and protection, -- so, how often should you exfoliate? To avoid over-exfoliating, it&apos;s best to&#xA0;save your scrubs for 2-3 times a week.</p><p><strong>Guess what?</strong> Regular (but not excessive!) exfoliation helps to stimulate circulation and collagen synthesis which plumps skin&#x2019;s texture for a more youthful appearance.</p><h3 id="mistake-6-too-many-products">Mistake #6: Too many products</h3><p><a href="https://www.provenskincare.com/quiz/concern">A streamlined skincare routine</a> is not only easier on your wallet and brain--it&#x2019;s also vital for skin health. A gentle cleanser, day lotion with SPF, and night cream tailored to your skin type are all you need. Exfoliate 2x per week, and apply hyaluronic acid serum before moisturizing. That&#x2019;s it! Marie Kondo would be so proud if she saw all your cleared-out shelf space.</p><p><strong>Did you know?</strong> Simplifying any area of your life will lower stress levels, which lowers the amount of cortisol your body produces--and that&#x2019;s good for your skin.</p><h3 id="mistake-7-leaving-skin-bare-60-seconds-after-cleansing"><strong>Mistake #7: Leaving skin bare 60 seconds after cleansing</strong></h3><p>After cleansing, immediately apply an alcohol-free toner or serum and <a href="https://www.provenskincare.com/quiz/concern">moisturizer.</a> If you leave your skin bare for more than one minute, it will start to dehydrate as the skin&#x2019;s moisture evaporates into the air. (In very humid climates, this will happen a little more slowly).</p><p><strong>Best practice:</strong> Apply your toner or serum while the skin is still damp, and then quickly apply a layer of moisturizer to seal in hydration.</p><h3 id="mistake-8-not-cleaning-your-smartphone-screen"><strong>Mistake #8: Not cleaning your smartphone screen</strong></h3><p>Just think about how many times a day you touch your phone. Now think about everything else you touch with your hands, and how many other people touch those things: door handles, cash, etc. &#xA0;Your phone screen is covered in bacteria, and when you take a call, you press it against your cheek... yuck! Try to wipe your phone screen every day with an anti-bacterial wipe (even a makeup wipe will do).</p><p><strong>Stay fresh:</strong> Be sure to wash your pillowcases at least once a week, so your face has a clean resting place at night, too.</p><h3 id="mistake-9-over--or-under-moisturizing"><strong>Mistake #9: Over- or under-moisturizing</strong></h3><p>How often should you <a href="https://www.provenskincare.com/blog/the-best-way-to-moisturize-super-dry-skin">moisturize your face?</a> Ideally, you should have two moisturizers: one with SPF for daytime, and a night cream to repair and hydrate while you sleep. It can be hard to know if you&apos;re over-doing or under-doing the hydration, so how much water is needed for good skin? Generally, the rule is around eight glasses of water/fluid a day. However, if you feel thirsty, you&#x2019;re already dehydrated, so try to sip regularly throughout the day.</p><p><strong>Drink up:</strong> Sleep is vital for good skin, but your body naturally loses water overnight.
